OCD and exposure with response prevention (ERP)
Obsessions, compulsions, and the treatment with the strongest support for obsessive-compulsive disorder.
What OCD is
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) involves obsessions (intrusive thoughts, images, or impulses that cause anxiety) and compulsions (behaviours or mental rituals to reduce distress). The cycle is reinforced short term but maintains the problem.
Common examples
- Fear of contamination and excessive washing
- Doubt (“Did I lock the door?”) and repeated checking
- Intrusive harm thoughts and neutralising rituals
- Need for symmetry or “perfect” order
What is ERP?
Exposure with response prevention (ERP) means gradually facing triggers (exposure) without performing the compulsion (response prevention). With repetition, the brain learns anxiety drops without the ritual.
ERP should be planned with a professional trained in OCD, especially if symptoms are severe.
In Anto
Anto includes an OCD (ERP) protocol among its 8 structured paths. Chat can help identify patterns, but moderate or severe OCD treatment requires specialised clinical support.
